Bicycle Tubes Have Either Schraeder or Presta Valves


The first thing you have to know when ordering bicycle tubes is your valve type. The one on the left is a presta valve with its cap removed. To put air in the tire you have to unscrew the nut on top. Bicycle tubes with presta valves are slightly lighter, and they are used on most road bikes and higher end mountain bikes. The valve on the right is a schraeder valve. This is the same type of valve as you would find on your car tire.

The second item you need to know when ordering bicycle tubes is the tube size. For most road tires Tube sizes, like tire sizes, are specified by the diameter followed by the tire width. These can either be in inches (such as 27 X 1.25) or millimeters (like 700 x 28). Since tubes expand, some are specified with a range of sizes. If you can't find your exact size, get a tube that is slightly smaller. It will expand to fill your tire.

The final item you need to know is the length of the valve stem. For most bikes this is 32 millimeters (about 1.25 inches). Some racing bikes have deep rims to make them more aerodynamic. These require tubes with longer valve stems.
