Two nights of our trip were spent at Lincoln State Park.
Thomas Lincoln moved his family into this area from Kentucky
about the time Indiana became a state.
His family included 7 year-old Abraham Lincoln,
destined to become one of America's greatest presidents.
Just north of the state park in Lincoln's Boyhood Home Historical
Park.
It contains the land where the Lincoln cabin stood,
the grave of Abe's mother, Nancy Hanks Lincoln,
and a living history farm.
On the second night of our stay at Lincoln State Park,
we had the pleasure of viewing the musical "Young Abe Lincoln"
at the amphitheater.
It was absolutely delightful, and I recommend it highly.
Unfortunately, I have heard that 2005 might be the last year that
is performed at the park.
The photo on the left shows Becky Lingner & I at the sign that
marks the corner of the Tom Lincoln's farm.
Here's the rest of our group, also along the rail fence marking
the Lincoln farm.
On the left is Karl Steegman,
in the middle are Julia & Jeff Clark on the tandem,
and on the right is David Kennedy.
All of us are CIBA members,
but non-members are also welcome on our rides.
Our group was pretty compatible.
Everyone was easy to get along with & nobody seemed to be in
a hurry.
We tended to ride together on the flats,
then split up a bit as we encountered hills,
which was fairly often on this route.
We would then come together again somewhere down the road.
On the left is a photo of one of the places where we would re-group.
It's the "Possum Junction General Store".
The gal running the cash register had on a t-shirt that said:
"Possum: The Other White Meat".
We stopped whenever we came across little stores like this,
which wasn't all that often.
Several of the small towns we passed through didn't have any stores
at all.
The first two nights we camped in areas that weren't near any
restaurants.
If you are ever in this part of Indiana, be sure to visit the church
at St. Meinrad & the one at the Monastery in Ferdinand.
Both of them are absolutely beautiful.
It is amazing how the stained glass can look so dark when viewed from
the outside, yet be absolutely brilliant from the inside.
The photo on the left is from the church in St. Meinrad,
but the church at the Ferdinand Monastery is equally impressive.
Here is our last campsite on the trip.
At first glance it didn't seem like much of a place to camp.
It's at the corner of two state highways, in a small grassy area
without a lot of shade.
If you look in the photo above the blue tent on the left,
you can see a swarm of mayflies.
They were all over the place along the Ohio River,
but fortunately they don't bite.
It actually turned out to be a pretty nice place to camp.
Across the street was a nice restaurant where we had an excellent
dinner.
Afterwards, we bought some firewood & got a fire going back at the
campsite.
The restaurant let us borrow some chairs, so we sat around the
campfire and waived at the boaters as they came off the Ohio & went
up this little tributary by our campsite.
