Gore-Tex socks are excellent for bicycling or backpacking.
The 3-layer Gore-Tex fabric is waterproof but breathable
(allows perspiration to pass through it but not liquid water).
I have a pair of socks like this & actually use them more for backpacking
than cycling.
They let your feet stay dry when you have to cross small streams
(ankle deep water) or hike on muddy trails.
Gore-Tex socks are also good for keeping your feet dry when your
cycling shoes or hiking boots are wet from the previous day.
When you are using Gore-Tex socks while cycling, it is important to also have rain pants to keep rain from running down your legs into your socks. Otherwise the Gore-Tex fabric will hold that water inside. Rather than keeping your feet dry, they will keep them immersed in water. Always wear a liner sock inside your Gore-Tex socks. They are not intended to be worn next to your skin. These socks aren't cheap, but they are worth the money. I don't like being wet, and having wet feet is especially annoying. I never go backpacking without them, unless the weekend forecast says no rain & I know there are no streams to cross. Here's your webmaster crossing a stream on the Laurel Fork Creek Trail
in the
Big South Fork National River & Recreational Area.
Don't try this trail without Gore-Tex socks, because there are innumerable
creek crossings.
On most of them, you can't just hop across on rocks.
We had to take a detour & added another creek crossing to the route when
an unfriendly 4-foot snake blocked the trail.
I didn't know what type it was, so I later described it to a friend.
He said it was probably a cottonmouth.
